The ingredient list question
Blue Buffalo's marketing hinges on what it doesn't have: no corn, wheat, soy, or by-product meals. For owners who read labels, that's meaningful. Purina Pro Plan does include corn gluten meal and wheat bran in some formulas β these aren't harmful (they provide real nutrients), but they're why Pro Plan loses on pure ingredient aesthetics.
Here's the nuance: published veterinary research doesn't show corn and wheat causing problems for the vast majority of dogs. True grain allergies exist but are rare (under 1% of dogs). The real filler villains are ingredients like unnamed "meat meal" or "animal digest" β neither of which appear in either food.
The vet recommendation gap
This is where Pro Plan pulls ahead. It's the most-fed food by practicing veterinarians, which matters because vets see which foods produce healthy dogs long-term. Purina funds more nutrition research than almost any other brand, and their AAFCO feeding trials β actual dogs eating the food for 6+ months β go beyond Blue Buffalo's formulation-based validation.
Blue Buffalo has gotten better here since being acquired by General Mills, but it still carries less weight in veterinary circles.
Recall history
Blue Buffalo has had several recalls β vitamin D toxicity in 2017, potential beef thyroid hormone in 2015, aluminum in 2010. Pro Plan has had fewer major mass recalls in the last 15 years. Neither brand is dangerous; both respond quickly to quality issues. But if recall history matters to you, Pro Plan's record is cleaner.
Breed-specific formulas
Pro Plan offers more genuine breed-specific formulations β Sport for high-drive working dogs, Bright Mind for senior cognitive support, sensitive-skin lines for allergy-prone breeds. Blue Buffalo's breed-specific formulas tend to be more marketing-driven (a "small breed" bag that's really just smaller kibble).
Price reality
At comparable bag sizes, Pro Plan usually costs $5-15 less per bag. Over a year of feeding a Lab, that's $60-180 in savings for arguably better nutritional validation.
